Item type:Publication, Chemical profiling and cholinesterase inhibitory activity of five phaedranassa herb. (amaryllidaceae) species from ecuador(2020) ;Moreno R. ;Tallini L.R.; ;Osorio E.H.Montero E.It is estimated that 50 million people in the world live with dementia, 60-70% of whom suffer from Alzheimer's disease (AD). Different factors are involved in the development of AD, including a reduction in the cholinergic neurotransmission level. The Amaryllidaceae plant family contains an exclusive, large, and still understudied alkaloid group characterized by a singular skeleton arrangement and a broad spectrum of biological activities. The chemistry and biodiversity of Ecuadorian representatives of the Phaedranassa genus (Amaryllidaceae) have not been widely studied. In this work, five Ecuadorian Phaedranassa species were examined in vitro for their activity towards the enzymes acetyl- (AChE) and butyrylcholinesterase (BuChE), and the alkaloid profile of bulb extracts was analyzed by GC-MS. The species Phaedranassa cuencana and Phaedranassa dubia showed the most AChE and BuChE inhibitory activity, respectively. To obtain insight into the potential role of the identified alkaloids in these inhibitory effects, docking experiments were carried out, and cantabricine showed in silico inhibitory activity against both cholinesterase structures. Our results show that Amaryllidaceae species from Ecuador are a potential source of new drugs for the palliative treatment of AD. © 2020 by the authors.29 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Editorial Design Based on User Experience Design(2020); ; ; ; Fierro-Saltos, W.This research deals with editorial design based on user experience design. The traditional editorial design has had to adapt to the new digital media composition, where multimedia audiovisual elements unthinkable a few years ago need to be integrated. The participation of the reader, as an external observer who only receives information through texts and images, now has new scenarios in which he can actively participate and decide what will come to his hands. In this study, a work methodology based on UxD User Experience Design is presented, in which will generate the editorial design of an educational book on environmental issues, which includes augmented reality for children from 6 to 8 years of age. The aim of this study is to know if an editorial product with augmented reality and developed from the user experience design can improve meaningful learning in a playful and active way. For its development, a composition model based on the Fibonacci sequence and the golden ratio will be used. Additionally, its graphic composition will be guided by the Massimo Vignelli canon and will be complemented by the reticular model of Beth Tondreau. The augmented reality markers position will also be based on the composition model previously mentioned, which will allow keeping the attention of the reader in the printed document and in the augmented reality animations. The user experience design will be applied with teachers, parents and students from 4 schools in Quito and Ambato. Once the production is completed, the impact on teaching-learning process will be evaluated with a control and a test group, and the methodology with which they will work in the classroom with the educational material developed will be defined. At the end of the study, copies of the book will be delivered to the participating schools of this research for its implementation. © Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2020.38 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings

Item type:Publication, Scaffolding quantum entanglement in secondary school: from tangible analogy to computational simulation(2026); ;Saravana Prakash Thirumuruganandham ;William Daniel Lituma GonzálezHugo Chancay OrtegaBackground and purpose of the study: The rise of quantum technologies necessitates integrating foundational quantum mechanics (QM) concepts into secondary education. However, inherently abstract phenomena like quantum entanglement pose significant pedagogical challenges, as traditional formalism-based approaches are often inaccessible. This study introduces and delineates an innovative, scaffolded pedagogical model designed to foster robust conceptual understanding of entanglement in secondary STEM education, moving beyond reliance on mathematical formalism. The proposed pedagogical model: The presented contribution is a detailed pedagogical sequence following a deliberate learning trajectory. It begins with a tangible analogy (magnetic interactions) as a conceptual anchor for correlation, then transitions to computational tools (Bloch sphere visualization, Qiskit simulations). These tools facilitate exploration of quantum concepts weakly addressed by the analogy (e.g., superposition) and allow more authentic engagement with quantum behavior. Underpinned by constructivism, cognitive load theory, and QM education research, the model strategically repurposes the analogy’s limitations as pedagogical opportunities to introduce and contrast key quantum features like non-locality and superposition with classical intuition. The sequence integrates exploration, guided use of representations, and critical comparative discussion. Conclusions and potential implications: This paper provides a theoretically grounded pedagogical model for introducing quantum entanglement in secondary STEM education, combining tangible and computational tools in a scaffolded manner. The approach offers potential advantages over traditional methods by providing concrete starting points and explicitly using classical limitations to illuminate quantum principles. While promising, rigorous empirical validation is the essential next step. Future research should investigate the model’s effectiveness in authentic classroom settings, informing curriculum design and teacher development for incorporating QM into secondary STEM. Item type:Publication, Ontological Model in the Identification of Emotional Aspects in Alzheimer Patients(2023); ;Lanzarini L. ;Gómez H. ;Thirumuruganandham, SCastillo Salazar D.X.The present work describes the development of a conceptual representation model of the domain of the theory of formal grammars and abstract machines through ontological modeling. The main goal is to develop an ontology capable of deriving new knowledge about the mood of an Alzheimer’s patient in the categories of wandering, nervous, depressed, disoriented or bored. The patients are from elderly care centers in Ambato Canton-Ecuador. The population consists of 147 individuals of both sexes, diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, with ages ranging from 75 to 89 years. The methods used are the taxonomic levels, the semantic categories and the ontological primitives. All these aspects allow the computational generation of an ontological structure, in addition to the use of the proprietary tool Pellet Reasoner as well as Apache NetBeans from Java for process completion. As a result, an ontological model is generated using its instances and Pellet Reasoner to identify the expected effect. It is noted that the ontologies come from the artificial intelligence domain. In this case, they are represented by aspects of real-world context that relate to common vocabularies for humans and applications working in a domain or area of interest. © 2023 by the authors.29 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings

Item type:Publication, Active Methodologies: An Approach to Virtual Teaching in Natural Sciences(2023) ;Becerra-García E.; Viera Muñoz F.During the training process on Natural Science subject in elementary school, it is important for the student to know, understand, respect, conserve, care for and value nature, the benefits it receives, interact with the environment, recognize the characteristics of each element of nature, its cycles, risks and care. The main objective of this work was to implement active methodologies in the science teaching-learning process. The methodology is based on quantitative methods, non-experimental designs, cross-sectional studies, theoretical, empirical and statistical methods. The technique used was a survey as an instrument and a questionnaire for data collection. A survey was applied to 40 people (students, teachers) of eighth grade, to obtain information on the interventions implemented by teachers. As a result of the survey analysis, the need to renew the essential methodological strategies to improve the teaching-learning process was identified, for which three active methodological strategies were developed for Natural Sciences’ teaching associated with the environment (physical, chemical and environmental). The strategies were designed with creativity, the use of environmental and recycling materials together with technology, each with the following elements: title, materials to be used, procedure, graphic representations and application examples. These active methodological strategies allow students to learn through the development of processes and skills that can be used in a variety of emerging situations and also allow teachers to provide a comprehensive and quality education. Based on the experience of the application of strategies in the area of Natural Sciences as future work in the educational context, it is intended to identify a set of abilities and skills in students in various subjects in order to strengthen teaching methodologies in teachers with the application of new technologies and digital resources that generate a new vision in the field of research. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2023.35 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings

Item type:Publication, Using Kinect to Detect Gait Movement in Alzheimer Patients(2021); ;Lanzarini L. ;Guevara C.Alvarado H.G.During the aging process, the elderly can experience a progressive and definitive deterioration in their gait, especially when they have neurological disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease. Effective treatment requires accurately assessing these issues in mechanical stability, the muscular-skeletal system, and postural reflexes. For Alzheimer patients in particular, gait analysis represents an important method for determining stability and treatment, which is the key objective of this investigation. Thus, this article describes the creation of a dataset on the walking gait, focusing on the distance covered by the patients and the angle of their legs as registered by a Kinect device. All patients were examined at a recognized center for elderly care in the canton of Ambato, Ecuador. We worked with a population of 30 Alzheimer patients whose ages ranged between 75 and 89 years old. The retrieved numerical data were processed with Diffused Logic, which, when based on a series of rules, can determine the instability and stability of a patient with a neurological illness. As a result, it was possible to create a dataset that included numerical values of the walking distance for each patient. This information will be important to future health care research, especially for physiotherapists and pose estimation. © 2021, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.14 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
