The popular and solidarity economy has become a promising alternative in the economic and social context of Ecuador. This model seeks to overcome the limitations of the traditional profit-centered approach and foster a more inclusive and sustainable development, through ventures focused on equity, community participation and solidarity, as well as employment generation and poverty reduction through the active participation of entrepreneurs and the local community (Maldonado et al. 2017).

The Academy and the Link with Society: The Case of Business Administration, Indoamérica. Ecuador

The projection of the University towards Society acquires its significant relevance in the search for a higher education with social responsibility, pertinent and with relevance in the formative system of the substantive functions between teaching, research and liaison. The objective of this research is to highlight the main problems of the associations in zone 3 of Ecuador, given its importance in the learning process that allows the insertion of knowledge with social experience. The methodology will incorporate an exploratory descriptive type of research with the participation of sixth semester students of the academic period A23 of the Business Administration career, Universidad Indoamérica Ecuador, through a NEXUS 4D diagnosis, which seeks to collect the necessary information in order to control, improve and detect the shortcomings within the associations. The results obtained showed that the linkage programs and projects have weaknesses in their structuring, since we found problems in the process, the associations do not collaborate with the information, which has led to difficulties in time, in the evolution and development of the work. The document concludes by indicating the fulfillment of the laws and policies of linkage with the community in the Indoamerica University and the performance of the students of the Indoamerica University.

Factors Influencing the Economic Growth of the Business Sector in Zone 3 of Ecuador

In zone 3 of Ecuador there are diverse economic and productive activities, therefore, in this research work we intend to analyze the factors that influence growth in the business sector, a documentary-bibliographic research will be carried out through the review of different scientific articles, documents, books, texts and doctoral theses in order to build the state of the art, as well as data from secondary sources of national statistical offices will also be used. The result focuses on the discussion among public, non-governmental and private sector actors, on the economic factors that stimulate the emergence of new companies and the strengthening of existing ones with general information, which affect the initiative to the contribution to business growth and sustainability of the company. In the conclusions we can refer that the entrepreneurs of zone 3 should be more linked among themselves, should be more communicated, have more cooperation among them and establish long-term relationships between them, to generate better conditions that favor the business system and strengthen productivity and innovation. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2024.

Ecotourism in Ecuador and the Lack of Cultural Education for Health Benefits

Ecotourism or ecological tourism is a tourist typology that consists of carrying out recreational activities in natural areas with an environmental sustainability approach, the success of ecotourism in recent times lies in the multiple benefits it brings to our health. The objective of our research is focused on highlighting the lack of cultural education on the subject for health benefits through some strategies. The methodology applied has a mixed approach, documentary-bibliographic type through the review of different scientific articles, documents, books, texts and doctoral theses in order to build the state of the art, at the empirical level, we will work with statistical data from secondary sources in national statistical offices. The results reflect the lack of education that Ecuadorian citizens have on the benefits that ecological tourism brings to health and in the conclusions some strategies are recommended to give solutions to the cultural ignorance of people in the ecological field and to materialize education from early ages to achieve a healthy population, free of stress and improve the quality of life of Ecuadorian inhabitants. © 2024, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Attrition Factors and Retention Strategies in Distance Higher Education

Distance higher education faces significant challenges in student retention, affected by economic, academic, personal and technological factors. This study aims to identify the main causes of attrition and propose strategies to improve retention in this modality. Using a mixed approach, quantitative data from 3,835 students enrolled in a higher education institution in Ecuador were analyzed, complemented by qualitative interviews with administrative and teaching staff. The results revealed that economic (34.09%) and academic (27.79%) factors are the main barriers to retention, followed by family and personal problems (13.75%). In addition, limitations related to access and use of information technologies were identified, such as the lack of technological resources and the digital divide, which affect student performance. In conclusion, a comprehensive strategic plan is proposed that includes personalized tutoring, financial support, improvement of technological infrastructure and student welfare services. These strategies seek to reduce dropout, strengthen the educational experience and promote academic success in the distance learning modality.

In Ecuador, both the vulnerable sectors and the informal and underemployed workers face challenges in terms of employment and working conditions. Informality implies a lack of protection and benefits, while underemployment affects the quality of life. Inclusive policies are required to address these issues and promote equitable development. The objective of this study is to explain the incidence of vulnerable sectors in informality and underemployment in Ecuador for the foundation of public policies. The data analyzed comes from the National Survey of Employment, Unemployment and Underemployment (ENEMDU) - Accumulated. The results indicate that vulnerable sectors have a great impact on informality and underemployment regardless of factors such as gender, education and area.

The objective of this research is to analyze social capital in the generation of technological innovations in Ecuadorian companies. From the methodological point of view, the data from the Ecuadorian Institute of Statistics and Census (INEC) are taken from the ACTI 2012-2014 survey. The results point to the existence of an influence of social capital in the creation of technological innovations in companies. In Latin America, the achievements in the technological and scientific fields have been taken very much into account since it constitutes one of the objectives for sustainable development (ODS), after the appearance of covid, we understood that it is a key factor that allows the reduction of costs, since the physical material is no longer necessary and everything can be done through a program or app, facilitating the delivery of information quickly in time. The objective of the research is to evidence the importance that exists between education and the technological aspects that help to strengthen the integrated organization of the academy in students. The methodology is of qualitative approach developing a documentary study by reviewing articles, books and some material that helps in the literature about the link between the fields of technology and education. In the results there is a clear reality of advances in the technological domain in education in the digital era and its impact on pedagogy and academics. The conclusions are objective and manifest the new tendencies with which digitalization is handled in education and the use of its acceleration with the appearance of the pandemic by covid-19, which forced the virtual study, highlighting the inequality and the convergences and divergences between the educational system and the technologies.

Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) is facing a complex health, economic and social situation, characterized by a significant increase in the number of cases of Covid-19, which has led to the closure of businesses, the collapse of the health system and the vulnerability of tourism programs. In this context and with the fall of the production, it caused the increase of inflation, interest rates, unemployment, etc. The objective of the work is to highlight the current panorama of the countries of the region and to review their evolution and the proposals in these sectors toward the path of sustainable development. The methodology used is bibliographic research, and a documentary analysis was used as an instrument, using secondary sources such as economic reports, state reports and public institutions with a qualitative–descriptive approach for the years 2019–2021. The results reflect a very difficult panorama in the health, economic and tourism sectors, due to internal and external causes where the reduction of poverty and inequality follow in order of priority, with a level of agreement of 55% and 51%, respectively. The conclusions show very little growth in these sectors, given that cases of contagion continue to appear, the vaccination process is very slow, little economic reactivation caused by a slowdown in productivity that is manifested in the lag of sustainable development in the region. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2024.

Health and Economy: A Necessary Relationship to Face the Path Towards Sustainable Development in Latin America and the Caribbean, Post-covid

The health–economy relationship has recently emerged as one of the top priorities at the international level, and the emergence of the virus has caused a lot of human and economic pain. The pandemic has brought human and economic suffering to the international community. Most countries have been affected, and this has been evidenced in the deterioration of health and the contraction of economies, with greater incidence in Latin America and the Caribbean. The main objective was to highlight the current situation of both sectors and possible future developments. The methodology used was a quantitative–descriptive type of scientific research with updated bibliographic information, using as instruments secondary source documents such as state economic reports, updated statistical data, relevant scientific articles and publications in public institutions. The results reflect a difficult health and economic panorama due to internal and external causes, favouring the increase of inequality, poverty and political corruption. The conclusions demonstrate the little evolution that has existed in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) post-pandemic in the health sector and in the economy, which was on the verge of total bankruptcy in the face of such a devastating scenario of the coronavirus, with losses of -7.0% of GDP at the American level. Although new variants of the virus appeared and there was a relapse, by the end of the same year, the real GDP was predicted to increase by 6.3% in 2021, to moderate to 3% in 2022, taking into account the reopening of tourism as one of the main sources of income of these countries with 15.5% of the gross domestic product, all in terms of growth and sustainable development. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2024.
