Business Education vs. Entrepreneurial Attitude of Students of the Faculty of Administrative Sciences of the Universidad Técnica de Ambato

2024 , Palacio Fierro, Andrés , Ruth Zamora-Sánchez

This research details the entrepreneurial attitude of university students. The study aims to identify the factors influencing the entrepreneurial attitude of students in the Faculty of Administrative Sciences, as well as the importance of business education programs in fostering creativity, critical thinking, and entrepreneurship from early stages of academic training. To achieve this, the research explores students’ intention and motivation towards innovation, risk-taking, and entrepreneurial initiative. The study population consisted of students majoring in Business Administration and Marketing. Dimensions related to risk perception, creativity, motivation, and entrepreneurial intention were assessed. Findings indicate a notable predisposition towards entrepreneurship among university students, highlighting a high propensity for taking calculated risks and a proactive mindset towards problem-solving. Similarly, the influence of educational components was identified. These findings lead to the conclusion that there are significant implications for designing curricula and educational policies aimed at cultivating an entrepreneurial culture in the university environment, thereby promoting the intention to undertake entrepreneurial ventures, enhancing students’ ability to face challenges in the business world, and fostering innovation in the future.

Empirical evidence for intransitivity in consumer preferences

2020 , Guadalupe, J , Cruz Cárdenas, Jorge , Artola-Jarrín V. , Palacio Fierro, Andrés

Consumer preferences patterns; Edible and nonedible goods; Transitivity assumption; Preference reversal phenomenon; Strong and weak transitivity, Behavioral economics; Money; Macroeconomics; Econometrics; Experimental economics. © 2020The present paper addresses one of the most important assumptions in consumer preference patterns: transitivity. This assumption states that, logically, selections between goods are rational because of the transitivity statement, which posits that people always prefer goods in the following order: A is preferred to B, and B is preferred to C, so A is preferred to C. With the aim of proving this principle's validity, we conducted an experiment with 70 subjects and probed their preferences in relation to edible and nonedible goods. We used a survey methodology, which allowed us to analyze three distinct situations: 1) individuals faced with goods choices without restrictions; 2) individuals facing budget restrictions and price changes; and 3) individuals faced with decreased disposable income. The results mostly showed that there was no evidence of transitivity in consumer preferences. On average, transitivity appeared in only 8% of the sample, and in cases where transitivity was proved, it was revealed to be strong. The preferences were transitive primarily in relation to edible rather than nonedible goods. © 2020

Effect of enterprise risk management on firms’ outcomes with the moderating effect of knowledge management

2023 , Saeidi, Parvaneh , Saeidi S.P. , Galarraga Carvajal, Mercedes , Villacrés Endara H. , Armijos L.

Purpose: This study aims to test the effects of enterprise risk management (ERM) on firms’ outcomes and the moderating role of knowledge management (KM) on ERM–firms’ outcomes relationship. Design/methodology/approach: Data were collected via a questionnaire survey among public listed companies on the principal stock exchange market in Malaysia. A total of 124 questionnaires were received by mail questionnaire. The results were examined through structural equation modelling and partial least squares. Findings: The outcomes specified that ERM has a positive and noteworthy influence on firms’ outcomes, and KM has a moderating influence on the correlation among ERM and firms’ outcomes. Research limitations/implications: The qualities, procedures and laws of the Malaysian corporations chosen as the sample firms, as well as their regulations, may not be representative of all other countries. Moreover, this study considered only one variable as a moderator, while there are many variables that different studies can consider as moderator or mediators. Practical implications: The results of this research imply that employees’ awareness and knowledge of events, opportunities and risk, along with their engagement in the institute’s strategy, are critical for risk management and controlling. For the managers, the results of this research can be helpful to their businesses by identifying the effective KM capability that may enhance their positive outcomes. Managers and organizations can use KM as an instrument to increase ERM effect on firms’ outcomes. Social implications: KM and ERM are both significant intangible resources that are hard to imitate and are uniquely specified programs, which are important contributors to firm success in the long run. Moreover, the contingency theory of ERM was proved through the results of this study as it was identified in the public companies, that implementation of ERM as a strategic management practice, by organizations along with an effective KM may enhance the achievement of objectives and outcomes. Originality/value: This study helps to measure ERM comprehensively and how intangible assets such as KM can affect the comprehensive risk management process and its effectiveness. © 2023, Emerald Publishing Limited.

ICT as a Contribution to Ecuadorian Emerging Tourism in Regional Contexts, Balsapamba, San Miguel, Bolívar Province

2023 , Oleas-Orozco J.A. , Jara-Garzón P. , Castillo, L , Aguilar I.

Tourism currently constitutes a financial income for developing countries. However, the tourism management depends of public and private administration. In Ecuador, geographical conditions, nature, biodiversity, culture, and more have great potential as tourist attractions. The state administration prioritizes natural places, heritage sites and cultural representations located in main cities. Therefore, new and emerging regional initiatives have difficulties in dissemination and communication. In this scenario, ICTs constitute an alternative and economic way to spread new and potential tourist destinations. This research analyzes the ICT usefulness, such as mobile devices applications or APP, within an emerging tourist destination such as the Balsapamba parish, of Bolívar province. The study was carried out in two stages, an exploratory stage with a mixed approach (qualitative and quantitative), to know the communication status and tourist attractions diffusion. Also, it was inquired about ICT tourists’ habits. The info allows to produce an APP with tourist content. The second stage consisted of APP testing and verifying its usefulness and contents relevance. The results showed an effectiveness greater than 90%, relevance of content greater than 85% and technological usability satisfaction tool equal to 100%. The great versatility of ICT in the tourism field can be inferred for new destinations dissemination, not been considered by public administrations. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

Maturity of innovation culture in Ecuadorian companies

2022 , Espinoza Guano, Mónica , Jorge Á.-T. , Juan R.-G.

In the current situation, society demands innovative products and processes, so it is vital to promote their development for the creation of value propositions in companies, which are reluctant to invest in these aspects. The objective is to evaluate the innovation culture of companies through the model proposed by Rao & Weintraub for the identification of fields of action in Ecuadorian organizations. Interviews and surveys were applied to representatives of 49 companies, through 54 key questions to measure the culture of innovation. An index of 4.02 and a perception index of 4.07 were determined for the contrast. The instrument is reliable on the evaluation of the innovation culture index. The most highly valued elements are exploration, autonomy and challenge, while the elements to be strengthened are access to experts, financing and minimization of internal bureaucracy. © 2022, Associacao Iberica de Sistemas e Tecnologias de Informacao. Health and Economy: A Necessary Relationship to Face the Path Towards Sustainable Development in Latin America and the Caribbean, Post-covid

2024 , Morales Molina, Tania , Urrutia X.M. , Morales C.F. , Vásquez G.B.B.

The health–economy relationship has recently emerged as one of the top priorities at the international level, and the emergence of the virus has caused a lot of human and economic pain. The pandemic has brought human and economic suffering to the international community. Most countries have been affected, and this has been evidenced in the deterioration of health and the contraction of economies, with greater incidence in Latin America and the Caribbean. The main objective was to highlight the current situation of both sectors and possible future developments. The methodology used was a quantitative–descriptive type of scientific research with updated bibliographic information, using as instruments secondary source documents such as state economic reports, updated statistical data, relevant scientific articles and publications in public institutions. The results reflect a difficult health and economic panorama due to internal and external causes, favouring the increase of inequality, poverty and political corruption. The conclusions demonstrate the little evolution that has existed in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) post-pandemic in the health sector and in the economy, which was on the verge of total bankruptcy in the face of such a devastating scenario of the coronavirus, with losses of -7.0% of GDP at the American level. Although new variants of the virus appeared and there was a relapse, by the end of the same year, the real GDP was predicted to increase by 6.3% in 2021, to moderate to 3% in 2022, taking into account the reopening of tourism as one of the main sources of income of these countries with 15.5% of the gross domestic product, all in terms of growth and sustainable development. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2024.

2024 , Vayas Ortega, Germania , Dayaneth Arroba-Naranjo , Ximena Morales-Urrutia , Diego Lara-Haro

The objective of this research work is to study the business size of the construction sector in Ecuador through the application of a panel data econometric model. It seeks to identify the factors that influence the growth of this sector. The study population is construction companies active in Ecuador, according to the ISIC F classification, in the period 2018–2021. A methodology is used that includes a descriptive analysis to establish the behavior of the sector variables, as well as a correlational analysis to measure the significance of these variables in relation to growth. In addition, a panel data model that applies the assumption of fixed effects is used to verify Gibrat’s Law, which establishes that all companies have the same probability of growing regardless of their size. In conclusion, a significant relationship was found between sales and business size and growth in the construction sector in Ecuador. However, Gibrat’s Law is rejected in this case study
