Item type:Publication, Digital Twins in Higher Education: Applications, Challenges, and Future Perspectives(2026)The Fourth Industrial Revolution has introduced emerging technologies that are reshaping educational models, among them digital twins, originally developed in the aerospace industry as virtual representations of real systems. Their integration into higher education now enables the simulation of complex learning environments, monitoring of student performance, and personalization of learning processes. However, their adoption within university settings remains incipient, fragmented, and lacking in standardization, which limits their transformative potential. This situation underscores the need to systematize dispersed knowledge on their educational use. This study presents a review with a descriptive and exploratory approach, based on peer-reviewed scientific articles selected from databases such as Scopus, IEEE Xplore, ScienceDirect, SpringerLink, and Web of Science, published between 2018 and 2024. The findings indicate that digital twins are primarily applied for simulations (68%), learning monitoring (52%), and educational personalization (44%). Reported outcomes highlight improvements not only in learner autonomy, motivation, and acquisition of practical skills, but also in conceptual understanding, problem-solving abilities, and collaboration among students in project-based environments. At the institutional level, benefits include greater efficiency in resource management, reduction of physical laboratory costs, and continuity of teaching in hybrid or remote learning contexts. Nevertheless, challenges remain, including limited connectivity, high implementation costs, insufficient teacher training, and ethical risks. Item type:Publication, Supply Chain Optimization Through Collaborative Technologies in Industrial EngineeringTechnological integration in logistics processes has become a current challenge for the manufacturing industry. The main objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of collaborative technologies on logistics indicators, focusing on variables such as interoperability and the use of digital platforms. To achieve this purpose, a quantitative approach with a correlational design was employed, using logistics efficiency as the main evaluation criterion. Five manufacturing companies were analyzed, assessing variables such as cycle time, delivery punctuality, and inventory. Multiple regression analysis revealed that the level of interoperability (β = 0.62, p = 0.001) and the frequency of use of collaborative platforms (β = 0.48, p = 0.005) were the most impactful factors. Companies with high integration showed a 40% reduction in cycle time and a 13% increase in on-time deliveries. These findings show that not only is technological adoption crucial but so is its effective and collaborative integration. The importance of promoting an organizational culture oriented toward digital transformation is highlighted, as well as policies that encourage continuous training and systematic use of interoperable digital tools. Furthermore, the results suggest that technological integration can act as a catalyst for improving interdepartmental coordination and real-time supply chain visibility. These benefits contribute not only to greater operational efficiency but also to a higher adaptability in changing and demanding environments. This research provides useful empirical evidence for strategic decision-making in companies seeking to optimize their logistics performance through technological solutions. In conclusion, it is confirmed that a well-structured strategy of collaborative technological integration significantly improves logistics efficiency, which has important implications for the digital transformation of the industrial sector and its long-term competitiveness. Item type:Publication, Analysis of the Automation of the Commercial and Distribution Process in the Footwear Sector of Ambato(2025) ;Brandon Trujillo; ; Marco Antonio RíosDigital transformation integrates advanced technologies to optimize efficiency and enable automation without human intervention, thereby facilitating decision-making. Organizations rely on operational processes that structure and streamline internal activities, enhancing both productivity and performance. Currently, innovation and automation contribute to reducing errors, optimizing resource use, and ensuring quality in the delivery of products and services. This study analyzes the application of technologies, automation, and commercial and distribution processes, all of which are essential for managing sales operations and ensuring efficient product delivery. To assess the level of automation within organizations, an initial instrument comprising 40 questions was applied. However, it yielded a Cronbach's Alpha of 0.764, leading to its rejection due to insufficient reliability. Following a literature review, relevant technologies and tools used in organizational, commercial, and distribution processes were identified. Based on this analysis, a new instrument was developed, consisting of 32 questions and 172 items. This revised instrument underwent expert validation and achieved a reliability coefficient of 0.862, indicating high internal consistency. The instrument's applicability was tested through a pilot study involving 35 footwear companies located in Ambato, Ecuador. The results reveal that, although the use of technology demonstrates a positive correlation with customer growth (0.242), the influence remains modest. Moreover, the automation of commercial and distribution processes does not exhibit a statistically significant relationship with customer growth. These findings suggest that digitalization efforts alone are not sufficient to drive business expansion. Instead, they must be complemented by more effective marketing and commercialization strategies to fully capitalize on the potential of digital tools and automation. © 2025 IEEE.12 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, An Empathetic Design Approach to Digital Transformation from Legacies Web(2026) ;Viviana Cajas ;Matias Urbieta; ;Paulina Ponce-VillacísPatricio Morejón-HidalgoSoftware Systems are designed to run on specific devices but eventually, a new one arises that may not be apt to run the system. Time ago, Web apps were intended mostly for desktop devices; then the arrival of the mobile devices required to revisit UI layouts, and later Smart devices allowed a more sophisticated user experience. During the development process, there was no clear definition of the technology adoption roadmap that affects the access from new devices like Smart TVs or Smart Watches. As long as time goes by, applications become legacy because of many reasons like lack of maintenance or the advancement of new incompatible devices. This study’s main contribution to these limitations is an empathetic approach to assist this migration of legacy apps to new devices based on Markov chains that are a predictive user behavior method. Available functionality is prioritized, the experience of User Interface is re-thought, and the new experience is designed. We report the experience of applying the approach to a legacy app with an experiment performed by fifteen participants. The outcome highlights that a dynamic user interface based on the Markov model provides improved usability metrics of the ISO for the users, evidenced in the productivity labor, Fitt’s and Hick’s laws, the efficiency, the effectiveness, and satisfaction through comparison between versions. This work suggests this model makes possible a smart and proactive interface design plus the age and interests responsive web contributing to the economy of context23
