Role of demographic factors, attitudes toward technology, and cultural values in the prediction of technology-based consumer behaviors: A study in developing and emerging countries

2019 , Cruz Cárdenas, Jorge , Zabelina E. , Deyneka O. , Guadalupe-Lanas, Jorge , Velín-Fárez M.

This study investigates the predictors of the use of technology-based products and services in Ecuador (a Latin American developing country) and Russia (an emerging economy). A comparative study helps predict the use of four technology-based services, and tests the predicting capacity of demographic factors, attitudes toward technology, and cultural values. The first stage of investigation involves confirmatory factor analyses and invariance tests on the measurement scales used. The results of the proposed regression models indicate that demographic variables have the highest predictive capacity in the two countries. Attitudes toward technology also demonstrate some predictive ability, while cultural values have a negligible direct impact on technology use. The results of structural equation models indicate that cultural values have a fundamental indirect impact on the use of technology-based services, and such effect is mediated by attitudes toward technology. © 2019 Elsevier Inc.

Drivers for the Intention to Buy Wearables in a Latin American Country

2025 , Cruz Cárdenas, Jorge , Andrés Palacio-Fierro , Ramos Galarza, Carlos , Guacyra Nascimento-Queiroz

The daily conduct of millions of people worldwide demonstrates the profound impact of technology on contemporary civilization. Wearables are a prominent example of this transformation. Due to their significance, companies in this sector are considering nearly tripling their sales of these devices by 2028. However, understanding the factors that influence user adoption has become crucial. Most studies have been conducted in developed countries, so this research aims to explore these factors in a developing country to determine if there are differences compared to developed nations. The study uses a personal survey with a sample of 360 individuals and employs a multiple approach for the prediction model. Results show that an innovative attitude and hedonic motivation are key drivers in predicting the intention to buy wearable technology devices. The main conclusion of this study is that certain factors do not contribute to explaining the intention to purchase wearables in developing countries, as they do in higher-income nations. This finding suggests a need to adjust marketing strategies to better target Latin American markets

Hedonic and Utilitarian Motivations in Predicting the Buy Intention of Technological Products: A Study in Developing and Emerging Countries

2021 , Cruz Cárdenas, Jorge , Zabelina E. , Deyneka O. , Ramos Galarza, Carlos

An area of great interest for business is establishing the factors that determine consumer intentions to purchase new technological products. The present study seeks to contribute to this field of research by establishing how the consumer’s hedonic and utilitarian motivations help explain their purchase intentions. The present study consisted of a survey completed by 725 people in Ecuador (a developing country) and 376 in Russia (an emerging country). The data obtained were analyzed with a multiple regression, with the purchase intentions of five technological products being the variable to be predicted and the two motivations for the use of technologies as the predictor variables. Various demographic variables were introduced as control variables. The results obtained point to a secondary role for demographic variables. On the other hand, and in a consistent manner, hedonic and utilitarian motivations were significant predictors positively associated with purchase intentions in both countries. © 2021, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Knowledge Sharing in the Context of E-Learning: A Bibliometric Analysis

2025 , Cruz Cárdenas, Jorge , Ramos Galarza, Carlos , Andrés Palacio-Fierro , Jorge Guadalupe-Lanas

Distance education mediated by technologies, also called e-learning or online learning, has experienced tremendous growth. This growth has been supported by the advancement of disruptive technologies and the rapid expansion of the Covid-19 pandemic. Among the various benefits that this type of education offers is the possibility of knowledge sharing (KS) between individuals in a fast, fluid, and storable way. The present study, using bibliometric techniques, seeks to contribute to the academic and professional world of KS in technology-mediated learning environments. We identified 1,167 relevant documents (articles, conference papers, book chapters, and books) in the Scopus database on which the different analyses were carried out. It was established that KS publication in technology-mediated learning environments is experiencing rapid expansion, that this is a multidisciplinary field of study, and that it is carried out by institutions associated with developed and emerging countries. The science mapping analysis allowed us to identify three relevant research areas: 1) KS in the context of organizational education or employee training using e-learning; 2) psychological and social aspects in the adoption and practices of KS; and 3) KS in the context of e-learning in higher education institutions or universities. An analysis called the overlay visualization of terms allows us to identify a change in emphasis from the techniques and technologies behind KS to the people and communities that are protagonists of KS. This article concludes by discussing these results and their implications for research and professional practice.

University Students’ Rejection to Learning Statistics: Research from a Latin American Standpoint

2023 , Ramos Galarza, Carlos , Ramos V. , Cruz Cárdenas, Jorge , Bolaños-Pasquel, Mónica

Introduction: Negative beliefs, fear, avoidance behaviors, and superficial attitudes surrounding the learning of statistics create significant problems for university students in Latin America. Objective: To analyze the impact of fearful behavior, superficial work, and avoidance displayed by university students when it comes to statistics. Method: In this article, we give details about a quantitative research project carried out by two independent studies. The first (N = 310) focused on the development of a scale to assess negative beliefs, fears, and avoidance behaviors towards statistics, in which goodness of fit was determined in a 3-factor model. In the second study (N = 250), it was hypothesized that undergraduates perform superficially due to negative beliefs and avoidance behaviors when learning statistics. Findings: The proposed model explained 42% of the variance. In addition, in the analysis of the proposed mediation model, an adequate adjustment was found. In the discussion of this research project, the need to intervene in the negative beliefs, fears, and avoidance behaviors displayed by university students towards statistics is highlighted. Novelty: This research project explains why college students dislike or avoid learning statistics in depth. The findings will allow for a modification in the way statistics is taught so that Latin American professionals achieve better performance in this field. © 2023 by the authors. Licensee ESJ, Italy.

Bibliometric Analysis of Existing Knowledge on Digital Transformation in Higher Education

2022 , Cruz Cárdenas, Jorge , Ramos Galarza, Carlos , Guadalupe-Lanas J. , Palacio-Fierro A. , Galarraga Carvajal, Mercedes

Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) have been feeling great pressure to advance in digital transformation. This pressure has been intensified with the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic at the end of 2019. Because the digital transformation of HEIs has been attracting a growing number of publications, the present study sought to carry out a bibliometric analysis of such titles. For this purpose, 643 relevant documents were identified from the Scopus database in January 2022. The descriptive results show an accelerated growth of the relevant literature, with conference papers being the main form of publication, followed by articles, conference reviews, and book chapters. The areas with which the majority of documents were associated were computer science, followed by social science, engineering, and business and management. An analysis of the co-occurrence of terms based on the titles and abstracts enabled the identification of three thematic areas of interest: 1) digital transformation in teaching, particularly under the pressure exerted by COVID-19; 2) environmental influences on the digital transformation of HEIs; and 3) enabling technologies for digital transformation. A longitudinal analysis also based on titles and abstracts allows us to see how the primary focus shifted from the economic issue (in 2019) to the COVID issue (in 2021). This study concludes by discussing the theoretical and practical implications of the findings, demonstrating as a particularly interesting area for future research the study of the digital transformation of HEIs in a future post-COVID scenario. © 2022, The Author(s).

The use of disliked gifts from a consumer behavior perspective

2015 , Cruz Cárdenas, Jorge , González R. , del Val Núñez M.T.

To use or not to use a disliked gift is a dilemma for recipients. Their choice will affect their relationship with the giver as well as marketing and business. However, the study of this topic is scarce in the consumer behavior discipline. Through a survey on 1269 adults in Ecuador, a Latin American country, this study identifies variables from the recipient, the giver, their relationship, and the gift. These variables provide the solution to the dilemma and, according to these findings, present implications for theory and practice. © 2015 Elsevier Inc.

Organizational Culture and Digital Transformation: A Bibliometric Approach

2022 , Cruz Cárdenas, Jorge , Parra-Domínguez J. , Zabelina E. , Deyneka O. , Ramos Galarza, Carlos

Organizational culture is a key to the success of business digital-transformation initiatives. The current study presents a bibliometric approach to the current knowledge of culture and digital transformation. For this purpose, 407 relevant documents were analyzed. The descriptive analysis indicated a panorama of great growth in the literature. An analysis of word co-occurrence in titles and abstracts was used to identify four areas of research interest: (1) training and learning among personnel, (2) cultural values that underpin the digital transformation, (3) environmental influences, and (4) technologies that enable digital transformation. Finally, little international collaboration between author networks was found. © 2022 IEEE.

Factorial Structure of the EOCL-1 Scale to Assess Executive Functions

2021 , Ramos Galarza, Carlos , Cruz Cárdenas, Jorge , Bolaños-Pasquel M. , Acosta-Rodas P.

The process of assessing executive functions through behavioral observation scales is still under theoretical and empirical construction. This article reports on the analysis of the factorial structure of the EOCL-1 scale that assesses executive functions, as proposed by the theory developed by Luria, which has not been previously considered in this type of evaluation. In this scale, the executive functions taken into account are error correction, internal behavioral and cognition regulatory language, limbic system conscious regulation, decision making, future consideration of consequences of actions, goal-directed behavior, inhibitory control of automatic responses, creation of new behavioral repertoires, and cognitive–behavioral activity verification. A variety of validity and reliability analyses were carried out, with the following results: (a) an adequate internal consistency level of executive functions between α = 0.70 and α = 0.83, (b) significant convergent validity with a scale that assesses frontal deficits between r = −0.07 and r = 0.28, and (c) the scale’s construct validity that proposes a model with an executive central factor comparative fit index (CFI) = 0.93, root mean square error of approximation (RMSEA) = 0.04 (LO.04 and HI.04), standardized root mean square residual (SRMR) = 0.04, and x2(312) = 789.29, p = 0.001. The findings are discussed based on previous literature reports and in terms of the benefits of using a scale to assess the proposed executive functions. © Copyright © 2021 Ramos-Galarza, Cruz-Cárdenas, Bolaños-Pasquel and Acosta-Rodas.

Clothing disposition by gifting: Benefits for consumers and new consumption

2016 , Cruz Cárdenas, Jorge , del Val Núñez M.T.

In recent years, consumer behavior in the disposition of clothing has attracted increasing academic interest due to various economic, theoretical and environmental implications. This research seeks to contribute to the existing knowledge on this topic, from a scarcely-studied environment. Ecuador is a developing country in Latin America with high cultural collectivism, where gifting represents the primary clothing disposition method outside the household. This study focuses on the relationship between the values or benefits that consumers obtain from this disposition method and the new clothing purchases they make. This research uses a qualitative methodology in two stages with 35 in-depth interviews, which allows first to state and then support the hypothesis: When consumers gift clothing with core values associated with selfish motivations, such as the functional value in closets and various psychological values, the connection between disposition and new purchases becomes more likely. Although not linked to new purchases, the relational value appears as a transversal value in the disposition events under study. © 2016 Elsevier Inc.
