Globalization has had a significant impact on local cultures around the world, especially evident in Ecuador, where the rich tapestry of traditional gastronomy plays a crucial role in defining the nation’s identity; as the world becomes more interconnected, Ecuador’s younger generation, like their counterparts in many developing countries, is increasingly leaning toward foreign cuisines, often perceived as more modern or trendy. This shift not only neglects the diverse culinary heritage specific to various Ecuadorian regions, but also undermines the potential of traditional foods to attract tourists seeking authentic experiences. Ecuadorian gastronomy, with its unique flavors and textures, offers a window into the country’s cultural practices and history, making it an integral part of the tourism industry, but the gradual loss of this culinary heritage as local preferences evolve poses a threat not only to cultural identity, but also to the economic benefits derived from gastronomic tourism. Using the literature review method, this study collected and analyzed data from various documents highlighting the importance of local cuisine to the tourism sector. The results underline the need to strategically focus on revitalizing and promoting traditional Ecuadorian dishes to counter the influence of global food trends; also, the research delved into the reasons for young people’s inclination toward foreign cultures, suggesting a disconnection with their own cultural roots. It critically examined how this distancing could be reversed by fostering a deeper appreciation and understanding of local traditions. By promoting a reconnection with their gastronomic past, Ecuadorians can leverage their rich culinary heritage as a key asset to boost tourism. This not only enhances the authenticity and attractiveness of the tourism experience, but also supports local economies. Ultimately, the study confirms that preserving and celebrating ancestral gastronomy can play a critical role in sustaining tourism and maintaining cultural identity in the face of globalization.

Cultural tourism in Ecuador has become a crucial component of the tourism industry, highlighting the country’s heritage, traditions, and vibrant cultural landscapes. This sector allows travelers to deeply immerse themselves in local history, architecture, gastronomy, and customs, thereby enriching not only tourists but also contributing significantly to the local economy and sustainable development. Despite its positive contributions, cultural tourism faces significant challenges. These include overtourism, the commodification of local culture, and the growing socioeconomic inequalities that can arise from unsustainable practices. These issues require careful attention and well-planned strategies to ensure that cultural tourism can continue its development without compromising the country’s cultural and environmental values. To address these challenges, the research used a robust methodological approach that included a comprehensive literature review, statistical data analysis, and detailed case studies. This approach allowed for an in-depth exploration of the opportunities and challenges that shape cultural tourism in Ecuador, assessing how it influences local communities and heritage conservation. The findings of the study highlight the need for a multifaceted strategy that integrates community engagement, policy reforms, and creative marketing tactics. These strategies should aim to maintain the vitality and integrity of cultural tourism, ensuring its viability and the equitable distribution of benefits among all stakeholders involved. Furthermore, it is crucial to implement sustainable tourism practices that not only promote beneficial economic development, but also protect and value Ecuador’s cultural and natural heritage. While cultural tourism in Ecuador offers significant potential for economic and sociocultural development, it is imperative to adopt an integrated and sustainable approach to overcome the challenges and ensure that the benefits of cultural tourism are maximized and distributed in a fair and sustainable manner. This approach will not only benefit current generations but will also leave a valuable legacy for the future, consolidating Ecuador's position as a culturally rich and vibrant tourism destination

It explores how adventurous tourists of different ages, particularly older adults, have become a crucial source of economic income and a catalyst for the development of local communities. The study also discusses the importance of implementing sustainable tourism practices to protect fragile ecosystems and the islands’ endemic biodiversity. It also addresses challenges such as the introduction of alien species, the impact of increasing tourism demand on resources and infrastructure, and the crucial need for a balance between economic development and environmental conservation. The research examines how sustainable tourism has significantly benefitted local communities, not only in terms of employment generation but also in promoting environmental awareness and community participation, instilling hope and optimism for a sustainable, prosperous future. The research concludes by emphasizing the need for a holistic and adaptive approach to ensure that the Galapagos Islands remain a model of sustainable tourism, protecting its natural heritage and ensuring a sustainable, prosperous future for its inhabitants and adult tourists.
