    Background. Suicidal risk in university students does not require analysis solely from clinical parameters; it is also necessary to understand it from the perspective of psychosocial factors and the everyday life situations to which the students are mostly exposed. Furthermore, it is a phenomenon with multiple causes, so studying it by integrating the complexity of various actors can help us understand not only direct dynamics but also indirect, multifaceted ones. Objective. To estimate a sequential and latent multiple mediation model of emotional fatigue and social dysfunction in the relationship between loneliness and suicidal risk in Ecuadorian university students. Design. A descriptive, cross-sectional, multiple mediation study using structural equation modelling (SEM). The sample comprised 943 undergraduate students (64.4% women, 35.6% men) from six universities (61.1% public) in four Ecuadorian cities, aged between 18 and 47 years (M=21.62, SD=3.81). Results. Loneliness, emotional fatigue, and social dysfunction are latent predictors of suicidal risk, explaining 60% of its variance. Loneliness exerts both a direct effect on suicide risk and an indirect effect through the sequential multiple mediation of emotional fatigue and social dysfunction. Conclusion. Academic risk factors such as loneliness, emotional fatigue, and social dysfunction are key attributes to consider for preventing suicidal behavior in university students. These predictors can dynamically interact to generate both direct and indirect effects, allowing for a better understanding of the complexity of this phenomenon. © Moreta-Herrera, R., Gordón-Villalba, P., Rodas, J.A., Cuesta-Andaluz, E., Revelo-Sánchez, P., 2026.

    The objective is to identify the relationship between Subjective Well-being (SWB) and Psychological Well-being (PWB) in a sample of Ecuadorian adolescents, as well as to explore gender differences using a psychological network approach. A descriptive, relational, cross-sectional study employing psychological network analysis was conducted. A total of 567 adolescents participated, 57.1% were girls and 42.9% boys, aged between 12 and 18 years (M = 15.87, SD = 1.31). These adolescents were enrolled in 15 educational institutions across three provinces of Ecuador. The results show that SWB and PWB form a stable network with bridge nodes connecting the two theoretical communities, indicating co-occurrence, particularly through nodes associated with the cognitive component of SWB and mediated by affect. Gender-based comparisons revealed no significant differences between boys and girls, indicating an absence of differences in the network. It is concluded that the BS-BP network reveals specific mechanisms through which these components connect and their importance within the theoretical model of hedonic and eudaimonic well-being. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2026.

    Background. Relational self-esteem — self-worth derived from significant relationships — is central to psychosocial functioning. However, brief measures validated with appropriate methods for ordinal items are scarce in Ecuadorian populations. Objective. To examine the factorial structure, internal consistency, convergent validity, and gender-based measurement invariance of the Relational Self-Esteem Scale (RSE), using a cross-validation approach. Design. Instrumental, cross-sectional study with n=1.478 Ecuadorian adults. The sample was split for cross-validation: 40% (n=591) for EFA and 60% (n=887) for CFA. EFA used a polychoric matrix, ULS extraction, and oblimin rotation; factor retention was guided by parallel analysis. CFA employed WLSMV. Convergent validity was tested against personal self-esteem (RSES), collective self-esteem (CSE), and mental well-being (MHC-SF). Multigroup measurement invariance by gender was assessed (configural, metric, scalar, strict). Results. Parallel analysis and confirmatory factor analysis supported a unidimensional structure with robust factor loadings and an adequate overall model fit. The scale demonstrated high internal consistency and reliability. Convergent validity was established through significant positive correlations with measures of self-esteem, core self-evaluations, and mental health. The instrument showed full measurement invariance across genders, meeting all criteria from con" gural to strict levels. Conclusion. The RSE shows a unidimensional structure, adequate reliability, convergent validity, and gender invariance in Ecuadorian adults. Findings support using the total score as a brief, valid indicator of relational self-esteem in this context. © Larzabal-Fernández, A., Mayorga-Lascano, M., Lascano-Arias, G., Valdiviezo Rodríguez, D.C., Játiva Morillo, R., Moreta-Herrera, R., 2026.

    The Double Side of IA: How Automated Decision Making Challenges Confidence and Increases Anxiety
    (Springer Nature Switzerland, 2026) ;
    Herrera-Enríquez, Giovanni
    Artificial intelligence has begun to permeate managerial decision-making, yet many organizations remain hesitant to rely on algorithms when choices carry significant consequences. To clarify the roots of this hesitation, we conducted a systematic review of 37 peer-reviewed studies published between 1970 and 2024, following the PRISMA-2020 protocol. The evidence was organized into seven interrelated themes spanning technical design, organizational structures, ethical safeguards, and the psychological climate in which managers operate. Results reveal that adoption is driven less by raw performance claims than by the degree of trust managers place in AI tools. That trust rests on three pillars: transparent and reliable system behavior, a clear perception of usefulness and ease of use, and explicit protections against bias. When any pillar is weak, anxiety about ceding control grows, dampening adoption intentions. Drawing these strands together, we propose an integrative framework that pairs cost-efficient, explainable architectures with user-centered training and governance mechanisms. The framework not only lowers technical barriers but also addresses the human and ethical concerns that most often stall implementation. By illuminating how technological, organizational, and psychological factors interact, the study offers a pragmatic roadmap for managers seeking to harness AI while safeguarding stakeholder confidence. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2026.

    Data-Driven Profiling of Reading Processes in Secondary Students: Learning Analytics Insights From PROLEC Assessment
    The integration of Learning Analytics (LA) into traditional psychometric assessments offers a transformative path for personalizing secondary education. This study proposes a “psychometric-first” analytical pipeline that converts item-level responses from the PROLEC-SE-R battery into actionable learner models for Interactive Learning Ecosystems (ILE). Using data from 256 Ecuadorian secondary students, we applied Categorical Principal Component Analysis (CATPCA) to address the ordinal nature of the psychometric data, identifying four latent dimensions of reading: lexical, syntactic, semantic, and integration processes. Subsequently, a k-means clustering algorithm identified three distinct cognitive profiles: At-Risk (12.0%), Average (56.8%), and High-Performance (31.2%). The internal validity of these clusters was confirmed through a Davies-Bouldin index of 1.206 and stability analysis via Jaccard bootstrapping. To bridge the gap between psychometric profiling and Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), we developed a rule-based mapping for UI/UX adaptations, where profiles trigger differentiated scaffolding—such as intensive audio-support for at-risk students and complex inferential challenges for high-performers. Results demonstrate that this scalable approach provides a theoretically grounded alternative to hardware-dependent analytics (e.g., eye-tracking) in low-resource contexts. This study contributes to the field of educational data mining by operationalizing latent cognitive features into dynamic instructional interventions, fostering more inclusive and adaptive digital learning environments. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2026.

    Dyslexia remains a persistent challenge for teaching practice, requiring inclusive and effective pedagogical approaches. This study explores the use of art as an active methodology for dyslexia intervention through an exploratory single-case design. A four-month program integrating rhythmic, visual, and motor activities was implemented with an 11-year-old child diagnosed with dyslexia and attention-related difficulties. Reading performance was assessed using the PROLEC-R test at two points (pretest and posttest), analyzing subprocesses such as accuracy, speed, and comprehension. The results showed improvements in decoding, word and pseudoword reading, text comprehension, and reading speed, accompanied by a moderate-to-large within-case effect size (d = 0.81). However, limited progress was observed in letter naming and grammatical structures. These findings suggest that a multicomponent artistic intervention may contribute to improvements in reading subprocesses by engaging cognitive, sensory, and emotional dimensions. Nevertheless, given the single-case design, the results should be interpreted as exploratory and not generalizable. The study highlights the potential of art-based active methodologies as a complementary strategy in inclusive education contexts and underscores the need for further research with larger samples and controlled designs. © 2026 Zurita-Álava et al .

    Algoritmos de aprendizaje para predecir el uso de la inteligencia artificial generativa en estudiantes universitarios
    (Grupo Compas, 2026-07-15)
    The rise of generative artificial intelligence has transformed educational processes in higher education, generating both opportunities and challenges in university training. This study aimed to analyze machine learning algorithms to predict the use of ChatGPT and Gemini among students at the Escuela Superior Politécnica de Chimborazo in Ecuador. A quantitative, non-experimental, cross-sectional, and correlational design was employed, with a sample of 699 students selected through simple random sampling. Data were collected using a statistically validated questionnaire and processed using SPSS and Orange Data Mining. The results showed that sociodemographic variables (sex, age, religion, and academic semester) did not present significant associations with usage preference, indicating low explanatory power. In contrast, the frequency of generative artificial intelligence use was a relevant predictor, highlighting the importance of habit as a determinant of adoption. Furthermore, the Random Forest and AdaBoost algorithms achieved the highest levels of accuracy, confirming the effectiveness of ensemble methods. It is concluded that socio-educational conditions better explain student behavior than demographic factors, consolidating ChatGPT as the most used tool. Structural transformations in higher education offerings: modality transition, institutional heterogeneity
    (Frontiers Media SA, 2026-06-17) ;
    Ruiz-Onofre, Diana
    The technologization of higher education has advanced unevenly among national systems, and research gaps persist on the mechanisms by which this transformation is institutionalized in the formal academic offer. In this framework, this study analyzes the evolution of the modalities of academic offer in Ecuadorian higher education over three consecutive time periods. To this end, a database of 8, 710 third and fourth level degrees officially registered in Ecuador was used, on which descriptive and inferential analyses were carried out. The results reveal a structural, cross-cutting and heterogeneous transformation, expressed in the progressive adoption of online and hybrid modalities and consolidated in the most recent period. Factors such as the level of education, the epistemological nature of the programs, the type of institutional funding, and the geographical location acted as modulating variables of change, either accelerating, slowing down, or postponing it. The findings of this study allow us to formulate a set of proposals aimed at strengthening the quality, equity and effectiveness of higher education in non-face-to-face modalities. The practical implications of the study are related to territorial equity policies in the distribution of academic offerings, differentiated digitization strategies according to the type of institutional funding, quality regulation, and the need to propose a strategic reconfiguration of institutional offerings. © 2026 Galarza-G and Ruiz-Onofre.

    Environmental audiovisual narratives in higher education: the music video as a transversal didactic strategy for education for sustainable development
    (Frontiers Media SA, 2026-06-12) ;
    Zurita-Lagos, Carolina
    Higher education institutions are facing a growing challenge: to train professionals who are not only technically competent, but also aware of their responsibility towards environmental sustainability. Despite the urgency of the global climate crisis and the commitments set out in the United Nations 2030 Agenda, sustainability education in universities remains fragmented and rarely integrated as a cross-disciplinary competence. This article examines the pedagogical potential of music videos with explicit environmental messages as digital narratives to foster sustainability awareness among university students, regardless of their field of study. Three video clips were selected from a corpus of twelve candidates, through explicit criteria that include cultural reach, centrality of the environmental message, and pedagogical suitability for higher education. Each case is analyzed through a narrative-environmental-SDG matrix that articulates audiovisual resources, environmental problems represented, responsible agents, scale of impact and links with the Sustainable Development Goals. From the analysis, a conceptual proposal for didactic application is derived in three phases such as pre-visualization, guided audiovisual analysis and professional transfer, based on the theory of significant learning and the pedagogy of digital narratives. The proposal is applicable transversally to university curricula and contributes to the intersection between digital narrative pedagogy and Education for Sustainable Development, identifying a culturally powerful and systematically underutilized resource for sustainability training in higher education. © 2026 Londoño-Proaño and Zurita-Lagos.

    Designing the future: Star Trek as visual culture, speculative design, and imagination activator in human–technology interaction
    (Frontiers Media SA, 2026-06-05)
    Science fiction audiovisual narratives function as spaces for cultural and design experimentation in which technological interfaces, interactions, and imaginaries are visually articulated before their material realization. From this perspective, the present study aims to analyze Star Trek as a paradigmatic case of visual culture and speculative design, examining how its audiovisual narratives operate as triggers of the imagination that shape expectations about human-technology interaction and contemporary landscapes of communication. The research adopts a qualitative methodology based on non-participant observation and focused audiovisual content analysis, based on the systematic review of episodes of Star Trek: The Original Series and Star Trek: The Next Generation, in order to identify and categorize technological artifacts according to their communicative, interactional and design functions. These representations were later analyzed in a comparative way with technological developments documented through a bibliographic review in specialized databases such as Scopus, Web of Science, Google Scholar. The results show that devices such as portable communicators, voice-controlled interfaces, immersive virtual environments, telepresence systems and diagnostic tools operate as visual and communicative prototypes, influencing interaction paradigms and design expectations present in contemporary technologies. Rather than establishing direct causal relationships, the study concludes that science fiction audiovisual narratives symbolically contribute to technological innovation by mediating meanings, imaginaries, and design logics, positioning Star Trek as a form of speculative design within visual culture that articulates design, communication, and human-technology interaction in contemporary media environments. © 2026 Londoño-Proaño.
