Knowledge Cities: ICT and Urban Components

Based on a shift in the production matrix from goods and services to knowledge and innovation, countries on at least three continents have invested in the construction of knowledge cities. However, to what extent are knowledge cities (KCs) linked to the information and communications technology (ICT) on which they are based? Are KCs a technological consequence, or a political ideology oriented towards the reinforcement of an economic system? To answer these questions, three global examples and the 22@Barcelona case study were examined using qualitative methods. The findings revealed how political agreements and the modification of urban plans impacted the cities. We observed existing relationships among ICT, KCs, and the business structure that was implemented, although the latter was not part of the KCs. This study presents a theoretical input for KCs and highlights the need for new urban and architectural spaces that respond to the innovative milieu of nascent societies. © 2021, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Smartphones and Higher Education: Mapping the Field

Smartphones are devices widely used by the global population and are the main means by which people connect to the Internet. Smartphones are also being increasingly used in higher education, which has resulted in the generation of a large amount of academic and scientific literature. To present an ordered picture of this significant body of knowledge, the present study seeks to carry out a bibliometric analysis of the academic and scientific literature on smartphones and higher education. For this purpose, the present study uses the Scopus database from which 2,453 articles were selected. A descriptive analysis of this body of documents allows us to observe a rapid growth rate in the number of documents published annually. Additionally, it is possible to establish that the most research on the topic has been carried out in developed and emerging countries. An analysis of the co-occurrence of terms makes it possible to define three research areas: 1) technology and the applications of smartphones in higher education, 2) administrative and pedagogical considerations in the use of smartphones in higher education, and 3) negative effects of smartphone use on students. An analysis of the evolution of research priorities shows a shift of interest from a focus on smartphone technology and its applications to a focus on the negative impacts of the use of these devices and their prevention. Impact of Technology on Eating Disorders

Eating disorders are a wide range of abnormal behaviors related to food and the vision of the body, and they are diseases that can cause permanent damage to the human being until death. It has been seen that there is a close relationship in the impact of social networks and the use of various technologies that have led new generations to shape their perspective of the body and their food in a different and complicated way. Technology becomes the link that people use to relate to the world and allows them to create and transform themselves around body stereotypes that lead them to modify the quantity and quality of their food. On the other hand, technology also provides the human being with an addictive and possibly sedentary part, which makes the person stop being active, having as a consequence anomalies in their diet such as weight gain. Digital Divide: A Bibliometric Approach to Existing Knowledge

The topic of digital divide - the gap between those who have and those who do not have access to digital technologies - is of growing interest for both public and private sectors. This interest is reflected in an increasing number of academic and scientific publications focused on the topic. This study presents an overview of the digital divide research using a bibliometric approach. Analyzing 9,523 documents from the Scopus database, this study found that 1) there has been an accelerated growth in the publication rate on digital divide since 2018; 2) digital divide is a multidisciplinary field, led by the United States and other developed countries and some emerging countries; 3) the dominant term used to refer to the field, as per our analysis of the relevant keywords, is "digital divide"; and 4) as per our analysis of the evolution of keywords' importance, while topics related to technologies were of interest several years ago, current interest revolves around the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic, the elderly, education, and healthcare access. © 2023 IEEE.

Organizational Culture and Sustainability in the Context of Higher Education Institutions: A Bibliometric Study

Sustainability is of great importance for current and future societies, and higher education institutions (HEIs) play a leading role in sustainability efforts. Because organizational culture is a determining force in the success or failure of such efforts, this study examines the relationship between HEIs’ organizational cultures and their sustainability efforts. The research took a bibliometric approach and selected 594 relevant documents from the Scopus database. The descriptive analysis reveals a rapid growth in the rate of document publication that accelerates from the year 2015. At the level of both research and financial institutions that fund related research, most are linked to developed and emerging countries. An analysis of the co-occurrence of terms yielded four thematic clusters: (1) teaching and sustainability, (2) organizational and cultural change, (3) impacts of sustainability efforts, and (4) sustainability planning. From a dynamic perspective, the research emphasis has shifted from plans and projects to actors in university communities and their skills and knowledge. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Using Virtual Reality in the Treatment of Social Anxiety Disorder: Technological Proposal

The treatments for anxiety that have proven efficacy are based on cognitive behavioral therapy, this time we will focus on systematic desensitization, which aims to expose the subject successively to the element that generates the maladaptive response, with this purpose a technological application is proposed for the treatment of this disorder from virtual reality. To accomplish this goal, an electronic helmet where different scenarios will be projected is going to be used. The person who is wearing it will face the distressing stimuli, allowing the treatment of his/her anxiety. Temporal Focus and Innovativeness of Consumers in the Use of Technologies: A Cross-Cultural Study

Innovative consumers are very important to today’s businesses as they are the first adopters of new products. This article seeks to contribute to the existing knowledge on the characteristics and traits that innovative consumers possess by focusing on the temporal orientation of said consumers. The current study is a cross-cultural study based on a survey that was carried out in Ecuador (a South American developing country) and Russia (a Eurasian emerging country). The results obtained for the two countries consistently establish that the temporal focus in the future is a characteristic associated with innovative consumers. Organizational Culture and Digital Transformation: A Bibliometric Approach

Organizational culture is a key to the success of business digital-transformation initiatives. The current study presents a bibliometric approach to the current knowledge of culture and digital transformation. For this purpose, 407 relevant documents were analyzed. The descriptive analysis indicated a panorama of great growth in the literature. An analysis of word co-occurrence in titles and abstracts was used to identify four areas of research interest: (1) training and learning among personnel, (2) cultural values that underpin the digital transformation, (3) environmental influences, and (4) technologies that enable digital transformation. Finally, little international collaboration between author networks was found. © 2022 IEEE.

From Face-to-Face Learning to Virtual Learning: Students’ Perspective

This article reports the results found in an investigation which analyzed the perception that students have regarding the virtual learning process developed during the COVID-19 pandemic. The study involved 38 students from a Latin American institution whose age ranged from 13 to 15 years of age, who carried out their academic activities virtually for a school year, once the school period ended, a survey was applied to collect information on the experience in virtual classes, once the results have been analyzed, it is evident that the vast majority of students issued responses in favor of virtual teaching and that virtual classes served to develop their skills in managing technological resources, on the other hand a number of participants They did not indicate the learning experience as positive or negative. This may be related to the fact that a group of participants did not have good quality internet. In the same way, the results reflect that the students consider that not having adequate equipment and good quality internet quality are a limitation in the learning process virtual lift. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Bibliometric Analysis of Existing Knowledge on Digital Transformation in Higher Education

Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) have been feeling great pressure to advance in digital transformation. This pressure has been intensified with the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic at the end of 2019. Because the digital transformation of HEIs has been attracting a growing number of publications, the present study sought to carry out a bibliometric analysis of such titles. For this purpose, 643 relevant documents were identified from the Scopus database in January 2022. The descriptive results show an accelerated growth of the relevant literature, with conference papers being the main form of publication, followed by articles, conference reviews, and book chapters. The areas with which the majority of documents were associated were computer science, followed by social science, engineering, and business and management. An analysis of the co-occurrence of terms based on the titles and abstracts enabled the identification of three thematic areas of interest: 1) digital transformation in teaching, particularly under the pressure exerted by COVID-19; 2) environmental influences on the digital transformation of HEIs; and 3) enabling technologies for digital transformation. A longitudinal analysis also based on titles and abstracts allows us to see how the primary focus shifted from the economic issue (in 2019) to the COVID issue (in 2021). This study concludes by discussing the theoretical and practical implications of the findings, demonstrating as a particularly interesting area for future research the study of the digital transformation of HEIs in a future post-COVID scenario. © 2022, The Author(s).
